Evaluation Essay

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

As I took on the role on finding our title sequence's soundtrack and editing it, I have learnt how to edit soundtracks using Garageband which I did have to re-learn, how to download music, and edit it until it had the desired result. I would make sure that the pace was the same as our title sequence so that it would fit well and I have also learnt that pacing is key because it changes the atmosphere drastically. Pace, tempo, and pitch would also help to tell the narrative better and clearer. For example, if the soundtrack gradually got louder and faster, it would tell the audience that this particular scene is supposed to be intense. Our first  screening of our first edit of our title sequence did not have a soundtrack playing which made a huge and negative impact as the audience was confused as to what the genre was, the time it was set in but overall I learnt that a title sequence is hardly anything without its soundtrack since it plays a big role in telling the story in itself.

Whilst editing the soundtrack on Garageband, I found that only slight tweaks were needed in order to achieve our soundtrack and I simply just changed the pitch, tempo and pace of it. I made it so that it sounded quieter in some sections of the soundtrack so that it built suspense and made it sound lower than it originally was because the desired sound of it was for it so sound eerie yet still have those jazz elements to it.

I also learnt that the specific instruments in the soundtrack are important as well because it tells the audience what the genre is and sets the atmosphere without using something such as dialogue. For our particular soundtrack, I found that the saxophone was an important instrument to include because it emphasized the sophistication of our main character.

Ultimately, the soundtrack was easy to work with and was successful; resulting in the majority of the audience during the first screening enjoying it.

Final choice for soundtrack

As a group and taking in the survey's tallies, it was decided to use Quirquicho as our soundtrack. It was chosen for its jazzy and simple yet slightly disorientated order of the music which added an eerie element to it. Gordo Jose was also considered as one of the potential, final soundtracks however we found that some of the instruments were too loud at some places therefore did not fit the genre of our title sequence.

Production log

Pitch - cast

Mother/Mrs Cloutier - Sharon Stone

We chose to use Sharon Stone to play as our mother because of her appropriate age and her constant role as a serious character in other films she stars in. Such as Diabolique (1996) which is a drama, thriller, and horror film and this links with the genre of our title sequence therefore the role of a mother would suit her well.

Father/Mr Cloutier - Tom Hanks

We chose Tom Hanks because he has experience playing father roles, from previous films he has starred in before such as Forest Gump (2006) and has also played other serious characters. For example, in Apollo 13 (1995).

Female lead/Violet Cloutier - Gal Gadot

We chose Gal Gadot to be our main star because she has played numerous roles acting as a strong, intelligent yet seductive woman such as in Fast & Furious (2009) which was where she ultimately grew in popularity.

Detective - Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman is familiar with characters like a detectives which would make the performance more successful. For example, in the film Se7en (1995), he played an intelligent, independent and successful detective.

Victim - Adam Gregory

Adam Gregory was chosen to be our victim because he is young yet a successful man and would fit the role of our victim who is vulnerable and easily seduced. Adam also grew in popularity and gained a role in 17 Again (2009).
